Mat “GRIMM” Basso has spent more than two decades building a reputation as one of South Australia’s toughest and most recognisable heavyweight performers. Debuting in 2001, before Riot City Wrestling became the central home of his career in 2005/2006, GRIMM became one of the promotion’s founding figures. Known for his intimidating presence, wild intensity and dark sense of humour, he became a staple of the touring independent wrestling scene while also helping shape the next generation of talent back home.

Beyond his in-ring accomplishments, Basso is widely respected for his role as a head trainer and mentor at the Riot City Wrestling Academy, one of Australia’s most successful wrestling schools. Through RCW, he helped develop and guide future international stars including Rhea Ripley, Zaria and other wrestlers who would go on to compete on the world stage.

His career almost ended in 2020 following a shock cancer diagnosis. However, after lengthy chemotherapy treatment, and with the support of those around him, GRIMM returned to the ring in 2022, adding another chapter to the legacy of one of RCW’s most important and enduring figures.
